Abstract

In this work, we try to reflect on the formation of the humanity education in the Brazilian
Empire, seeking to find the main features of the educational system in relation to the formation of literary
studies. The Brazilian education was based on the ideas of classical thought, implemented by the Jesuits,
for the formation of male scholars and intellectuals. The literature was a tool for that. The teaching of
literature is built from these disciplines of history and rhetoric that resulted in the systematic study of
literature.
