In light of the Theory of Language Variation and Change and of Acoustic Phonetics,it is intended, in this study, to investigate dialectal and social marks of the speech of Ilha de Santa
Catarina (eastern region of this state), highlighting different forms of speaking the rhotic phonemes.
The corpus used in this piece of research is constituted by interviews recorded in studio with male
informants born in Florianópolis. The categorization of data and statistical analysis will be carried
out with the utilization of VARBRUL program. The data will be codified according to groups of
linguistic and social factors (GF). The qualitative analysis of these data will be done representation
tree. Thus, the aim is to obtain variants of the rhotics in the speech of the florianopolitano.
