Abstract

This article aims at showing how the language can identify a person with a specific community. The focus of this paper is the main character Javier Montes in the book Andamios, written by the Uruguayan Mario Benedetti. In the book Javier returns to Uruguay after a long political exile in Spain and he tries to overcome this experience abroad and reintegrate into the Uruguayan society. The language then helps him to readapt to his country. The voseo, which is spoken in Hispanic America, was not forgotten and it helped him to identify himself with his compatriots when he came back.
