THE CHALLENGES THAT MAKHUWA PEOPLE HAVE TO KEEP THEIR CULTURE BEFORE THE MULTI-LINGUALISM IN CABO DEGALDO REGION, MOZAMBIQUE
Abstract
The suggestion of this research in progress is to ascertain how Makhuwa people preserve their language, their beliefs and their traditions in the face of linguistic – cultural diversity of northern Mozambique. It is noticed that one of the ways found to maintain their identity is to experience their customs. To this end, it became necessary to comment on Makhuwa cultural diversity such as dancing, singing, proverbs, food, and rites of initiation. Thus, this paper intends to focus on how this people live despite having been colonized by Portugal, and also having been imposed the colonizer language as well as its culture, the people always looked for a way to resist from it. It will be also discussed in the course of this work, the conflict between Emakhuwa Language and various languages spoken in Mozambique and the region, among them Portuguese. We explain in time that due to the territorial complexity and divergence of Emakhuwa Language in the region, this study focuses only on the Ashaga people as well as their identity.
