Abstract

The study analyzes the organization and impact of the first edition of the World Nature Games, held from September 27 to October 5, 1997, on the West Coast of Paraná, Brazil. It seeks to understand the challenges and results of the event, both from a sporting and logistical point of view. The Games brought together 800 athletes from five continents, covering 11 cities in the region. The structure included six nautical bases with infrastructure to accommodate athletes and competitions, as well as logistical and health support for around 5,000 people. Despite the success in mobilizing the region, the event faced difficulties related to accommodation and weather conditions at the nautical bases. Diverse sporting activities, such as canoeing, sailing, rafting, and cycling, highlighted the potential of the natural setting for competitions. However, an informal analysis with participants revealed a lack of knowledge about the overall results of the event and Brazil's placement, indicating failures in information dissemination and the consolidation of historical records. The World Nature Games were innovative in using the environment as a sports setting but highlighted the need for better planning and communication. Despite some logistical challenges, the event showcased the sporting and tourism potential of the region, reinforcing the importance of integrating sustainable and efficient actions in organizing major events.
