Diversity as a Fundamental Right and its part in Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract

Diversity has acquired great relevance over the years. Supposing that life, liberty, security, and equality are the noblest fundamental rights, the inviolability of these rights implies the exercise of alterity and the intransigent refutation of intolerance. Sustainable development is a way to reduce the distances between the vulnerable and the rich, between dominant stereotypes and minorities. The UN 2030 Agenda addresses cross-cutting issues on the subject. In this context, this theoretical review aims to reflect on diversity as a fundamental human right and its role in promoting sustainable development. Exploratory bibliographic research was carried out. It is concluded that diversity, as a right of coexistence of the different ways of living and creating, can only be ensured if human rights and fundamental freedoms are preserved. Achieving the goals of sustainable development meets the end of direct and indirect discrimination, that is, it promotes equity. This is not about income growth associated with a higher level of personal satisfaction, but about tolerance of differences, about providing collectively infrastructure to basic services and public policies that are indispensable for the exercise of fundamental rights and guarantees.
