Abstract

This study aims to understand the challenges faced by black women in the job market based on a meta-synthesis. Metasynthesis consists of a qualitative research approach, which integrates and synthesizes results from multiple qualitative studies on a specific topic to identify common patterns, themes and conclusions, according to a study carried out by Honn (2013). This article found the experiences of women of color in diverse professional contexts, focusing on five specific qualitative case studies: science teachers in charter schools, nurse academic leaders, victims of institutionalized violence in higher education, and African American women in low-skilled jobs in large warehouses.  As the main results of the analysis carried out, elements and sub-elements emerged, such as: 01 – Lack of inclusion of Afro culture (emerged as sub-elements: oppression, silencing, belittling and lack of inclusion); 02- Feeling of persecution by white colleagues (devaluation of feelings, exclusion and psychological exhaustion);  03- Institutionalized and legitimized violence (systemic negligence, lack of public policies, structural racism and physical violence); 04 – Disparity of chances for Afro women (low labor qualifications, cost cutting and prejudice); and 05 - Double shifts and stereotypes imposed on black women (the accumulation of work, subjugation of women, devaluation and sexualization). As a theoretical contribution, this study presents reflections on elements and sub-elements related to the challenges faced by black women in the job market and as a practical contribution it provides support for the management of organizations to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
