Aging population is a growing and irreversible phenomenon that has significant implications for public
health, especially about the physical and mental health of the elderly. Among the main events that
compromise the quality of life in this population, falls stand out and, consequently, fractures – especially
femoral fractures – which affect not only physical well-being, but also psychological and social well-being.
This study, conducted through a literature review, aimed to analyze the effects of fractures on the mental
health and quality of life of elderly individuals, as well as the strategies to mitigate these impacts. The
search was carried out in the PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS databases, considering articles published
between 2019 and 2024. The search strategy included the descriptors "mental health", "quality of life",
"elderly" and "fractures", using Boolean operators. The results indicated that fractures, mainly due to falls,
generate physical consequences, such as pain, immobilization, functional loss and dependence, in addition
to psychological repercussions, such as anxiety, depression, fear of new falls and social isolation. Prolonged
rehabilitation, associated with the feeling of powerlessness and loss of autonomy, aggravates the emotional
suffering of the elderly and compromises their recovery process. Regular physical activity and psychosocial
interventions have been shown to be effective strategies both in preventing falls and in promoting mental
health and autonomy. It is concluded that there is a strong interrelationship between fractures, mental health
and quality of life in old age, and integrated preventive and therapeutic measures are essential.
