This article serves as a synthesis of the thematic section of volume 7 of the journal Onomastics from Latin America devoted to the relationship between onomastics and linguistic landscape. After confirming the links between different types of proper names, it details the methodological difficulties involved in establishing the role of crematonyms, toponyms and anthroponyms in the public sphere, primarily their inclusion in quantitative studies and, secondly, the determination of the language and its subsequent function as part of the mosaic of linguistic varieties that make up the linguistic landscape of a given territory. It concludes that proper names form an indissoluble and central part of public space and that both concepts are of interest to scholars of the social uses of language and communication.
