Empowerment of Elderly People who Study by Distance Education: English language teaching.

This study takes into account that confluence among technology, education and English Language can assure the empowerment of elderly people in a more democratic and fast way, considering advantages to knock down barriers of time and space, which are peculiar to Distance Education. The first issue is: how can Distance English Language teaching contribute to the elderly empowerment? Thus, in the first part, this proposition applies the bibliographic research method as a methodological strategy to answer this question as well as to reflect on how English Language in Distance Education modality is relevant to empower elderly people. Based on theoretical contributions, during the second phase, an online questionnaire was applied to a group of ten elderly people, participants of Extension courses in Foreign Languages at the Western Paraná State University (UNIOESTE). They accepted willingly to answer the questionnaire and check if there is any interest or resistance at their age to learn a foreign language based on this learning platform. The applied criteria were: elderly people should know how to master digital technology and have some social network registration. The questionnaire results reflect on how this group perceives DE platform as a language learning tool.
