Black identity in the 2018 National Program of English Language Textbook

Brazil is a country known for its rich ethnic, cultural and racial diversity, composed predominantly of black people who, contradictorily, are a minority in rights and access to diverse spaces. Given this reality, this research answers the following questions: How are the terminologies referring to ethnic-racial relations used in the English language PNLD 2018? What is the construction of black racial identity in the document of English language PNLD 2018? Therefore, in order to define terms such as race, ethnicity, identity, racism, prejudice, stereotype and racial democracy, as well as making possible the search and interpretation of these words throughout the English Language PNLD (BRAZIL, 2017), were used the following theoretical framework: Gomes (2005), Munanga (2003) and Hall (1990 and 1997). With some assumptions of Critical Discourse Analysis (ACD), with the theoretical support of Fairclough (1999) and Van Dijk (1993; 2015), this work consists of a qualitative-interpretative research in search of the meanings given to common terms in ethnic racial relations in the Guide to the National Program of English Language Textbook 2018 (BRAZIL, 2017). As a result, it was noted that the document does not deal with ethnic-racial relations incisively; so it could be more emphatic. This was noticeable both by the low incidence of terms related to black identity and the indeterminate form that they appear in the text of the document. It can be concluded that there is a need for English-language PNLD terminology to be used with greater emphasis so that it can indeed be better implemented.
