Crossing the postulates of the theory of imaginary from G. Durand, we chose eight Poems of a Portuguese writer Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen to be worked in four classes in the 7th year of elementary education at a private school, and, availing himself of activities linguistic and prioritizing the enjoyment of literature, thinking fundamental themes of human education. By emphasizing the poetic image and prompting the creative imagination of students, we focus in the topus death to see how they build their image, surrendering or facing it, guided by the schemes. The result, coming from deep analysis of the poem that carries the theme, A pequena praça, as well as the activities of the students, pointed to the possibility of making use of the imagination as a methodological tool for driving and training of readers of poetry in the classroom, attributing to the act of reading a new look, and building new teaching strategies in teacher / student relationship.
