Abstract

Critical thinking is a fundamental skill in the training of students, as it contributes to the development of critical thinkers, enabling them to make decisions, solve problems and communicate effectively, essential skills in the contemporary world. In this context, teaching literature emerges as a valuable tool in student training. The use of literature allows you to explore complex cognitive aspects, promoting the improvement of students' analysis, interpretation and argumentation skills. Therefore, this work aimed to discuss and reflect on teaching practices in developing critical thinking skills through literary texts, based on critical reading and literary literacy. Teachers working in high school were interviewed in four schools in the municipality of Linhares-ES. The results indicated teaching conceptions and practices regarding the development of cognitive skills, the involvement of these skills in their planning, the potentialities and difficulties in carrying out work with literary literacy and critical training. The lack of specific continuing education and planning time were identified as obstacles to this task, however, there are many successful initiatives and practices that allowed the evaluation of positive impacts on the training of young people in high school in relation to criticism and literary literacy.
