The aim of this study was to find out what nurses do about the neonate's first childcare appointment and to identify what actions and guidance are given to the neonate and his or her family at the Basic Health Unit. This was an observational, descriptive, qualitative study carried out in four Basic Health Units in a municipality in the state of Paraná. The data was analyzed using the Content Analysis technique proposed by Bardin. Five nurses from four Basic Health Units took part in the study and a total of eleven newborns were followed up during their first consultation. Five nurses from four Basic Health Units took part in the study and a total of eleven newborns were monitored during their first consultation. Among the nurses, the prevalence was female 80% (n=4); aged between 30 and 46; with ten years or more of professional experience 60% (n=3); all 100% (n=5) had postgraduate degrees. Three categories of analysis were defined based on the qualitative data: “Nurse, newborn and family: welcoming and establishing a bond”, “The role of nurses in monitoring the growth and development of newborns” and “Childcare consultations: weaknesses and challenges faced by nurses”. Basic child health actions have been carried out by the nurses at the units, but this practice needs to be continually evaluated in order to achieve quality comprehensive child health care.
