The Care and Silences of the Character Maria in Todos os nossos ontens, by Natalia Ginzburg

This article analyzes the trajectory of the character Maria in Natalia Ginzburg’s novel Todos os nossos ontens, in light of Silvia Federici and Simone de Beauvoir’s feminist theories on domestic labor, subjugation, and power. The study focuses on the silencing imposed on the character within the domestic sphere and highlights how the lack of recognition for female labor perpetuates marginalization and social invisibility. The analysis reveals the intersection of gender, aging, and affection, emphasizing how age intensifies the vulnerability of the subaltern woman. Furthermore, the role of literature as a tool for denunciation and resistance is discussed, as it gives voice to complex female characters who challenge patriarchal structures. The study concludes that Maria can be interpreted as a denunciation of structural oppression, while also proposing a reflection on the urgency of redefining the role of women in both society and fiction.
