“The name of the father” by Muniz Sodré
the artifice of analogy

The short story “The Name of the Father” (Sodré, 1988) recounts a psychoanalytic session in which Dr. Washington Joseph, a tall and slender Black man, attends to a blonde, thin, and pale woman who narrates having dreamt of disturbing strolls on lunar ground. Anxious, she wants to know whether it is something serious. In another dream, she states: “you were a sorcerer...”. In this analysis, I argue that the term “sorcerer“ evokes the archives of racism (Hartman, 2021), enabling a reading of phobias and specters within the dream of whiteness. Furthermore, it opens space for a counter-colonial reflection that discredits the artifice of analogy.
