A representation of the black in textbooks and readers: A Critical Discourse Analysis of racial stereotypes.

Critical Discourse Analysis, Textbook, Racial stereotypes, Black identity.Abstract
In this article we conduct a critical discourse analysis of a chapter in a History textbook in the content of History of Brazil and a reader used in high schools supported by the state of Rio de Janeiro in order to verify how the provisions of law 10.639/03 and the National curricular guidelines for the education of the ethnic - racial relations for the teaching of Afro - Brazilian and African history and culture are being considered in the analyzed material. For this, we have been based, on one hand, on the studies that deal with the definition of didactic book as well as about its distribution policy in Brazil (BATISTA, 2009, FAR, 2006, FREITAG, 1989; OLIVEIRA, 1984), and on the other hand, based on the Critical Discourse Analysis approach (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001; 2003; CHOULIARAKI & FAIRCLOUGH, 1999; MAGALHÃES, 2005). Such discursive approach seeks to identify the meaning of language in the production, maintenance and change of social power relations. We conclude that the analyzed (re) books produce racist stereotypes about the Brazilian black population as they silence (through the way images and texts appear in the book) the black resistance in the contemporary history of Brazil, which has serious implications for the construction of positive black identities.Downloads
