Abstract

The main objective of this study is to analyze environmental conflicts involving situations of environmental injustice in the indigenous community of Parnamirim, Caucaia, Ceará. We seek to understand land repossession as a strategy used by local residents to resist constant threats to their territory, such as those related to the expansion of the real estate market, predatory tourism practices, and the development of extensive agriculture. To this end, we used qualitative research methodologies that involved bibliographic research with a theoretical framework on categories and guiding concepts related to environmental justice and injustice, territorialization processes, and environmental conflicts, documentary research and analysis of two municipal decrees, and fieldwork in the repossession of Parnamirim carried out between October 2022 and April 2025. Among the main results, we identified environmental conflicts related to the community of Parnamirim, involving different uses of the territory by indigenous and non-indigenous residents, an entrepreneurial group, and the State in the figure of the Municipal Government of Caucaia. Furthermore, it was possible to identify that, in the circumstances researched, the repossession of land proved to be an important mechanism for fighting for and accessing land and territory, albeit provisionally, in a context of intense environmental conflict.
