Abstract

The thinking of Comenius has been revisited by various researchers concerned
with discussing the pedagogy of Comenius, being that he is known as "the father of modern
pedagogy". In contrast to this perspective, some researchers identify Comenius as a
theologian, emphasizing that while he was a pedagogue, his principal area of activity was
theology. Based on these contrasting perspectives, the objective of this research is to
demonstrate that the concept of education found in Comenius can best be understood based
on the presupposition of a fundamental inter-relationship between theology and pedagogy,
in that Comenius did not distinguish between the two. It is only with this presupposition
that it is possible to understand the motive for Comenius' understanding of education as
salvation for, or divine remedy for the cure of, the corruption of the human species, based
in teach, moral and piety, being that education has as its end regeneration and the
transformation of each person into a garden of delights for the Creator.
