Abstract

This study aims to examine the young people that have no physical modifications are saying about them, relating them to the debate on youth. We consider body practices for this survey, those related to body modification, which are: piercings, tattoos, dilators, the scarification etc. Accordingly, we defined the school space to undertake this research, for being a place that has a diversity of young subjects. We used as a research methodology the focus group as it is a feature that makes the collection of data through discussions among participants, and is not intended to assign values to questions problematic, but rather to give voice to them. This study took a high school, entitled Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul (IFRS), and the meeting was conducted with subjects who did not have any of the bodily changes mentioned above. The main considerations encountered during data analysis were: concern for the bodily practices associated with some meaning, that is, the participants noted that a body modification should be tied to a motive, a significant fact of life, among others. In addition, participants reinforced the argument that youth does not have "mature enough" to make important decisions because of inconstancy of feeling that is associated with being young, we also identified a concern with employment, as the young research demarcate to possess a body modification related to body modification can compromise access to the labor market.
