Abstract

This paper studies the effects of trade liberalization on income distribution in Latin American countries over the period 2000-2012 by the panel data methodology. It was found that the fixed effects model is more appropriate than the random-effects model to explain the relationship between the opening and the distribution, which is consistent with the issue of productive heterogeneity in these countries. It was found that the economic liberalization process has contributed to increasing income concentration in Latin American countries as some studies have already signaled, however, with methodologies and different periods. It is proposed that the opening process should take place in two ways: a) combination of openness to investment in the industrial sector; b) technological convergence through the shared diffusion regime of knowledge between partner countries in trade.
