Sustainability and valorization of land and its relationship with the baptism of rural settlements in Sergipe

This article is an excerpt from the Dissertation presented to the Postgraduate Program in Letters, by Robson Santos Silva – The Toponymy of Rural Settlements in Sergipe: Denomination, memory and ideology, which aimed to analyze the ideological and identity relations present in the toponymic motivations for the naming of Rural Settlements of Agrarian Reform in Sergipe. Starting from a critical analysis, that is, centered on the subarea of Critical Toponymy, the previous study highlighted the ways in which ideological lines within the thought of the peasant movement are present in the lexical formation of the names of the settlements. For this study, the names studied were grouped into Motivational Fields, according to Silva, 2024, and analyzed based on the studies of Critical Toponymy (Berg, L.; Vuolteenaho, J, 2009 and Rose-Redwood; Aldernan, 2011). To this end, the notion of topophilia presented in Tuan, 2012, was important, in addition to other concepts. Based on the Motivational Field of Topophilia, this work presents the names of Rural Settlements whose motivation for naming comes from a relationship between man and the place occupied, having as a guiding thread the feeling arising from the cultivation of the land from an awareness of sustainability promoted by topophilia – an action of affection for the inhabited place. Being an offshoot of the aforementioned dissertation, this study also aims to expand the ideas present in the aforementioned dissertation from which the article originated, as well as to contribute to the debates about environmental sustainability promoted by rural workers, considering the reflection of this action in the naming of places, since the study highlights the way in which the notions of affection for the land and environmental sustainability materialize in the lexicon of place denomination.
