Historical Perspective and the Decolonization of Memory in the Fictional Narrative of Torto Arado

Our discussion aims to understand the materiality present in the fictional work Torto Arado (2018) by Itamar Vieira Junior. To achieve this, we will use concepts such as decoloniality, collective memory, and historicity to analyze the construction of the narrative and understand how it confronts and, at the same time, deviates from the "official" history (the Eurocentric one), especially regarding the Black diaspora, the construction of quilombos, and slave labor. From non-Eurocentric epistemologies and the narratives of marginalized characters (Black people, quilombolas, women), we can affirm other ways of knowing and existing in the world, solidifying the concept of identity and proposing new ways of looking at and interpreting history based on the stories, experiences, narratives, and memories of the sisters Bibiana and Belonísia and the entire community of Fazenda Água Negra.
