Abstract

This article presents the results of preliminary research from the
perspective of Higher Education regarding the skills and qualifications of the faculty of the University for the Elderly (UNATIS). It analyzes the contemporary view of old age, the basic knowledge of a faculty member who works with the elderly and the relationship between Education and Gerontology. It describes the structure and history of the Universities for the Elderly; mainly the University for the Elderly based at the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ), its research field and its General
Program. It discusses the importance of UNATIS for the health of the elderly, the presence of elderly students at universities and UNATI/UERJ’s pedagogical proposals related to geriatric health. It represents and analyzes, through the concise table of the results and commentaries from the interviews performed, the profiles of the faculty members from a sample of participants from UNATI/UERJ, and concludes that there is an urgent need to study the issue of senility in order to provide professionals with better conditions to assist the elderly.
