Abstract

This article comprises an investigation of how cultural issues are treated in the education of English teachers and how they characterize the profile of the Language and Arts graduates described in the National Curricular Guidelines for Language and Arts Courses (BRASIL, 2001). In this discussion it was necessary to mention concepts such as the native and non-native speaker of English. In this study, intercultural communicative competence is acknowledged as the capacity that enables the learner of a foreign language to interact with it and his/her own language. This conception is analyzed in the National Curricular Guidelines for Language and Arts Courses which states the need for providing the English teacher with an intercultural aptitude. The conclusion is that the determination of the Curricular Guidelines is not practiced by at least fifteen universities investigated in this study.
