Abstract

Many indigenous communities seek in their territory ways to earn income in order to meet the diverse needs of their peoples. Therefore, they create projects linked to sustainable development, almost always in dialogue with NGOs, Universities and government agents. However, achieving positive results from these initiatives and interactions with other structures depends on a lot of effort and the ability to learn from mistakes. In this sense, the objective of this article is to describe and discuss the experiences of the Paiter Suruí people from Indigenous land Sete de Setembro (TISS) in the search for sustainable development. For this purpose, bibliographical research was used and, in addition, an interview with one of the representatives of an indigenous association in order to update some information collected during the bibliographical research. Even under external pressures on their territory, the Paiter Suruí people have demonstrated over the years great capacity for agency, such as the creation of the Pamine reforestation projects and REDD+. The life experience of the Paiter Suruí points to the perspective of sustainability desired in the 2030 Agenda, for promoting food production, preserving the ecological integrity of the territory, for integrating the economic, social, cultural, ecological and ethical dimensions, taking care of the land, of water, biodiversity and climate A timeline of the experiences of sustainable projects is presented. Other sustainable initiatives may be underway in the different villages of TISS, which poses as a limitation of this research, which was predominantly bibliographical
